The Orangutans of Tanjung Puting National Park

Gliding through the kumai river of the Central Kalimantan, this trip will take you to visit Kalimantan’s Tanjung Puting Wildlife Reserve.

It was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and is inhabited by over 38 species of mammals and 200 species of birds. This place is also a sanctuary for critically endangered orangutans, and our tours will visit two of three different camps where rescued orangutans are fed and rehabilitated.

ITINERARY

Day 1 : Airport-Kumai-Tanjung Harapan-Houseboat

Upon arrival at The Pangkalan Bun Airport you will be greeted and picked up by our local guide who will accompany you along for the rest of your trip.

From the airport, we will travel to Kumai river where we will board a boat and cruise up the Sekoyer river. The boat is a traditional wooden boat called Klotok with the size of 17meter by 2.5meter with roof and an upper deck where you can view the rain forest as we glide by. After around 1 1⁄2 hour cruise, we will stop by at the Tanjung Harapan Rehabilitation Center for Orangutan and witness the feeding of Orangutans at 3.00pm.

Once finished, we will continue our journey on the Klotok and cruise slowly along the Sekoyer River while observing the wildlife to see Proboscis Monkey, Long-tailed Macaque, and birds along the riverside. We will spend the night on the boat, eat our Dinner and sleep on the boat with comfortable mattress, pillow, and a mosquito net. Kitchenette and simple western style toilet and shower are also available on the boat.  

Day 2 : Houseboat - Camp Leaky – Houseboat

After having our breakfast on the boat, we will proceed to go upstream to the Camp Leaky area, the legendary Orangutan Rehabilitation Camp, where Prof. Birute MF.Galdikas started her Orangutan study in early 1971. Boating a side creek through tea colored water where you will see the magnificent reflection from the vegetation along the river. We can see saltwater crocodile and other wildlife along the river banks. After having our lunch at Camp Leakey, we can spend the rest of the day by trekking on the nearby Borneo's rain forest, and back to see the Orangutan feeding time at
2.00 pm. Having done with all the activities, we will be back to the boat for dinner and stay overnight.

Day 3 : Houseboat - Pondok Tanggui – Pasalat Reforestation.

After breakfast, we will continue our journey to the second camp called Pondok Tanggui to see another orangutan feeding. It will take about 1.5 hour to reach Pondok Tanggui from Camp Leakey and upon our arrival in Pondok Tanggui, we will walk up to the feeding station to see more orangutan on this camp and continue down the river to the Pasalat Camp for the Carbon Offsetting activity.

Here, we will plant one tree per person as a contribution to our national park and to grow more trees for the world. This program is our carbon offsetting contribution for all the carbon we have produced from travelling from our home country  to visit the site. After planting the tree, back to the boat for dinner and overnight.

Day 04 : Houseboat - Trekking in Tanjung- Harapan – Motor boat Canoe. 

After breakfast, we will prepare ourselves to explore the rainforest to do more wildlife watching / photography trip. Trekking up into the forest from Tanjung Harapan to Sungai Buluh, the whole journey will take about 3 hour, then on our arrival in Sungai Buluh, we will continue our journey on a small motor boat then back to our houseboat.

Lunch will be provided on board, and you will have free time to explore your surrounding area from the boat, where you  will be spotting a group of Proboscis Monkey around the river bank in the afternoon. After that we will spend the night boating down to the nipapalm area to see thousand fireflies whilst having dinner on our house boat. 

Day 05 : Houseboat – Kumai – Pangkalan Bun. 

After breakfast we will boating down to Kumai, continuing on the last leg of our Tanjung Putting trip. Once arrive, we will provide you with a direct transfer to Pangkalan Bun Airport for your next destination.
